  14. If you are using a NON-U.S. keyboard, you must also read the
  15. file named "non_us.txt" for essential information!

  18. This program will save you time.  Global 
  19. Abbreviations gives you instant access to
  20. anything you want to define.  It gives you
  21. this access anytime and anywhere!
  22.  
  23. To install, simply run the setup.exe file. 
  24. That's all there is to it.  
  25.  
  26. The installation will create a new 
  27. program group with Global Abbreviations,
  28. the Quick Tour, Readme and Help icons. The installation
  29. will not make any changes to your system files.  
  30. Note:
  31. If you use PC Tools for your program mgr. you should 
  32. switch back to the Windows Program Manager for installation.
  33.  
  34. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you move the program 
  35. to your STARTUP GROUP (or equivalent) since you 
  36. will ALWAYS want access to your Global Abbreviations.
  37.  
  38. We also heartily recommend that you spend 5 minutes
  39. to take the Quick Tour.  That will show you some 
  40. of the main features.
  41.

  45. Note: Global Abbreviations has an Uninstall feature so 
  46. don't be shy about installing.  You can always get rid of
  47. it if you don't like it (not much chance of that though).

  52. 1. Please remember!  When you use a 
  53. :Launch Abbreviation to launch a .hlp file,
  54. you MUST INCLUDE THE COMPLETE FILE NAME of the .hlp file.
  55. There is a reminder of this on the popup text you see 
  56. when you begin to enter a :Launch abbreviation in the
  57. Edit Line of the Editor.
  58.  
  59. Example->    :gabhelp c:\windows\globlabb\gabhelp.hlp
  60.  
  61. 2. The gabhelp file and all other documentation says that
  62. you must enter :Launch and :Paste abbreviations completely
  63. (i.e., no partial recognition).  You SHOULD always do this,
  64. however, if you enter a partial AbbrevPart, the first partial
  65. match in your Active List will be :Launched or :Pasted.
  66.  
  67. 3. Here is some further information on the
  68. operation of The Immediate Hot Key.  You will
  69. almost always get the "Added-> " message when you hit the 
  70. Immediate Hot Key.  You must realize that the program has
  71. no way of knowing if what it Added is what you "meant."
  72. The most common problem is if you have not delimited what
  73. you have typed with whitespace.  This typically happens 
  74. when you move the caret with the mouse or the arrow keys
  75. and YOU see some whitespace, but have never typed it on
  76. the keyboard.  If you have any problems with recognition
  77. of an abbreviation defined in this way, you should go look
  78. at what it really Added, or else just quickly redefine it
  79. by typing it one more time (with the WHITESPACE!).
  80.  
  81. 4. The documentation could be more emphatic regarding 
  82. the recognition of keystrokes.  REMEMBER that arrow keys
  83. and mouse activity mean nothing to the recognition 
  84. sub-system.  Normal printing keystrokes are all that it
  85. ever sees.  This must be the case.  There is no way for 
  86. Global Abbreviations to know if the application you are
  87. using is in insert or overstrike mode.  This makes it 
  88. impossible to interpret arrow keys correctly.  The backspace
  89. key IS always understood, because it always means the same
  90. thing to everybody.
  91.  
  92. 5. The uninstall feature does not remvove the globlabb.exe 
  93. file.  This is printed on the list of files not removed.
  94. If you do uninstall, you should check the option to print
  95. the list and then remove the globlabb.exe file and the
  96. gabhelp.hlp file.  ALL files that can be SAFELY removed 
  97. from your system by uninstall are; the rest can be printed
  98. out and you can remove or rename at your own discretion.
  99.

  101. ----Installation Trouble Shooting----
  102.  
  103. Below are some notes about things that can go wrong when
  104. installing ANY Windows application.  These are not specific
  105. to Global Abbreviations.
  106.  
  107. 1. Bad Bits.  It is possible to end up with corrupted files
  108. because of the nature of transmission systems.  Most modern
  109. modems and transfer protocols do error checking, but are not
  110. fool proof.  If you experience problems during install it 
  111. may be that you have bad bits.  One of the most common ways 
  112. that people end up with bad bits is when using "ftp" and
  113. forgetting to set binary mode ("bin" command) before
  114. downloading.
  115.  
  116. 2. Not enough space.  You should have at least 1 MB of free
  117. space on your hard disk to install Global Abbreviations.
  118.  
  119. 3. Corrupt File System.  If there are problems with your file
  120. system, this can cause errors during the installation of
  121. any Windows application.
  122.  
  123. 4. NETWORKS:  If you are installing from a network you may
  124. get a message saying that the file "ver.dll" could not be found.
  125. The easiest work around for this is to look for the file named
  126. "ver.dl_" in the directory you are installing FROM (probably the
  127. directory you are reading this file from).  Rename that file to
  128. something else, e.g., "ver2.dl_" and then try running setup.exe 
  129. again.  You can also try renaming the "ver.dl_" to "ver.dll".
  130. If this doesn't solve the problem, the best thing is to
  131. just copy all of the files to a floppy and run setup.exe from the
  132. floppy.  Lots of different things can happen on a network, mostly 
  133. having to do with what permissions you have for what drives/dirs.
  134.  
  135. ----Startup Trouble Shooting----
  136.  
  137. If there were no errors reported during setup, you should have
  138. no problems running the program.  As always, things can go
  139. wrong.  These notes apply to any Windows application and are
  140. not specific to Global Abbreviations.
  141.  
  142. 1.  Old .DLL or .VBX files in the wrong directory.  By 
  143. convention, all non-proprietary .DLL and .VBX files should
  144. reside in your windows/system/ directory.  Some applications
  145. incorrectly install .DLL or .VBX files in your windows/ directory
  146. instead of the windows/system/ directory.  If you get an error
  147. message about an out of date version of some .DLL or .VBX file
  148. you should note the name of the file and then search to see
  149. if there is a version in any directory other than your
  150. windows/system/ directory.  If so, rename the file with a
  151. different extension so that it does not interfere with the
  152. proper operation of any program.
  153.  
  154. 2. Not enough resources.  Even the smallest application can
  155. cause this message if you try to start it when you have many
  156. other applications running.  Simply close down some application
  157. and try again.  Note- when the abbreviations are turned ON, 
  158. Global Abbreviations uses almost no system resources.  Even 
  159. when they are off and you are using the Editor or Importer
  160. it still uses few resources.
  161.

  165. You will find Global Abbreviations to be of the highest
  166. quality.  It has been tested again and again before release.
  167. As of release 1.5, there are NO known bugs, only the help 
  168. file clarifications listed above in this file.  There IS a long
  169. list of future enhancements.  Don't forget that your registration
  170. will entitle you to one free year of upgrades!
